Gourmette's upcoming product is a dessert product that can be relished by people of all ages. In response to celebrate the forthcoming showcase, we strive to showcase the divine spectrum of ice cream flavours that can satiate a diverse palette. We believe it is imperative to recognise and appreciate our customers' cultural backgrounds and upbringings, the things they cherish and connect with. Often overlooked by many brands, Gourmette aims to offer an experience that allows customers to revisit and celebrate their heritage gastronomically. We intend to introduce new ice cream flavours that feature ingredients commonly associated with customers' nostalgic memories, thereby invoking feelings of sentimentality and fondness.
Our visual and interaction design project is commissioned for the launch of a new ice cream flavour by Gourmette, targeting the Gen Z demographic. Initially, we wanted to have a theme of ‘Sophisticated Carnival’, with fun and playful activities. However, we received a number of feedbacks to tailor our idea more towards to the sophistication aspect.
This project will showcase the ice cream flavours in an interactive and immersive experience, which will be displayed on a screen. The immersive display will introduce the newly launched flavours to the audience, allowing them to interact with the flavours and explore their unique characteristics. Through this experience, we aim to engage and excite the audience while promoting Gourmette's commitment to healthy and nourishing food.
Our Tools
In this project, we will be utilizing two technical tools, namely Arduino and Touch Designer, to bring the interactive installation to life. Arduino is a versatile electronic tool that supports both hardware and software and allows for the creation of interactive communication systems. Touch Designer is a node-based visual programming language that leverages real-time data to create captivating mixed media works with motion detection and interactivity. These tools will work in tandem to enable the interactive installation to respond to user input and generate visually stunning displays.
Initial ideas
Our final idea draws inspiration from the 2007 film Ratatouille, specifically the scene where the main character Remy savours food with swirls of various colours appearing in the background. The film's animator confirmed that Remy experiences synesthesia, where taste is associated with colour and shape. This concept of visualising flavours sparked the idea of incorporating different textures, colours, and shapes to generate a synesthetic experience for the audience.
Our objective is to create an immersive and engaging experience for users by designing a minimalistic and organised spatial layout, challenging and fostering explorations of the displayed objects. The buttons used in the design will be spherical, resembling ice cream scoops, with each button representing a specific flavour interpreted as a texture on its surface. Moreover, the buttons will be painted in a pale white colour, prompting curiosity among users and compelling them to engage with the interface.
To capture the essence of nostalgia with the sophisticated personality, we conducted a survey asking respondents to share their favourite flavours from childhood. After receiving a significant number of responses, we discovered that strawberry, milk, and chocolate were among the top picks. To infuse Singaporean culture into our new ice cream flavours, we decided to use chocolate malt, condensed milk, and sour plum as the final ingredients. This allows us to craft unique flavours that pay homage to local culture while also providing customers with a nostalgic experience.
